My peers, my friends, my rivals, all have made me the artist I am today. I do not create artwork for myself, but for those around me. My artistic life is centered in those who influence me, those who inspire me, who push me to strive for greater heights.
I won’t lie, I try to be funny. Nothing pleases me more than the sound of my friends laughing at a joke I made, or a comic I wrote that tickled them the right way. But, like many artists, I will occasionally lack inspiration for humor or detail in my work. That’s where my friends come in. Often times, if I ask for an idea on what to draw, someone will shoot me a concept that is both challenging and interesting, or they will show me something they created that inspires me to recreate it in my style. I’ve always had a very competitive spirit, so when I see a challenge that I think I can overcome, for instance, an artist who is better than me, I don’t get mad, I just prepare myself for a challenge, and use it as an opportunity to improve myself.
Growing up I loved comics, but I couldn’t figure out how they put them on newspapers like they do, so I researched how they do it, and I fell in love digital media. I got an Intuos 4 Medium sized WACOM tablet for my 13th birthday, and I honestly had no idea how to use it. But I kept practicing, and I eventually figured it out, but I always felt this strange detachment. I didn’t feel like I make really detailed and beautiful work, because I would lose track of where I was in my own workspace. Then I discovered the cintiq, the drawing tablet of the future. It makes it so the disconnect between you and your artwork is completely gone. Your pen touches the screen, and it’s like writing on paper. Ever since that day I’ve been in love with those beautiful tablets.
I love ANIMATION. That might sound pretty basic, but considering I grew up in the middle of nowhere, nobody really knew how to animate, and I remembered the first time I saw an animator on YouTube. It was then I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I want to animate for Disney or Pixar Studios, as long as it’s a place I can work to my full potential, I’ll be happy no matter what.
I tend to enjoy recreating concepts people present me with, or tell stories about life but put a funny, enjoyable spin on life. People paint their outlooks so bleakly all the time. The news is always depressing, and nobody seems to try to laugh about life anymore. It’s all serious all the time. I try to make things energetic and fun, and I try to avoid bringing other people down around me. I find it’s better to look on the bright side of life, and when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
